March Newsletter

Spring really has arrived on the west coast of Canada. Green shoots lengthen daily and spring bulbs are thinking about flowering. Out of the wind, the sun is really quite warm. I seem to have found a renewed sense of energy, which I hope will benefit you. This month, I have collected a bumper crop of opportunities for you to submit all of the writing you have been doing this winter. I've included markets for film and TV scripts. Don't be afraid of this medium if you have a good idea. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as my mother would say. Good luck with your submissions. Let us know of your successes.

Writing Tip: - Short stories - Bridges and Transitions - In general, short stories should encompass a short time span. If you story covers a lengthy time, you can often cope with the transition by use of the flashback technique. Start your story as near the end as you can. Grab your reader's attention in the first paragraph. Keep the pace going with suspense. End your story as soon as possible after the moment of change/conflict. One final thought - never resort to the device of "And then I woke up to find that it was all a dream." Your reader will feel cheated with such an ending.

Cue Time - We have added a new section to the Windshift Newsletter. Every month we will include a couple of writing ideas to help you kick start your writing sessions.

1. Imagine you had the ability to make a magical creature come to life. What would it be like and why. Take your creature and journey through a story together.

2. "Think before you act." Is advice often given? Think of a time in your life when you didn't heed this advice. Write a story about the experience.

Questions and Answers

Q. There are many silent spaces in my novel. How do I best convey these silences and how do I easily move on from a silence without losing my readers? - Phil G. -

A. Thank you for such an interesting question. When words stop between your characters, the physical world of your novel doesn't stop. Eyes shift. Hands run through hair. Fingers tap on tabletops. Waiters are summoned. Any of these gestures can be significant within a dialogue and offer a viable moment of transition to the next scene.
