November 2006

Thought for the Month

In Flanders Fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- John McCrae -

Please put 'manuscript critique' in the subject line.

Publishing News:

Kiran Desai was named the winner of the £50,000 Man Booker Prize for Fiction for The Inheritance of Loss, published by Hamish Hamilton on Tuesday, October 10th .

The Indian-born writer has a strong family tie with the prize as her mother Anita Desai has been shortlisted three times since 1980 but has never won. This year, however, her daughter, Kiran, has won the acclaimed literary prize.

Author of the 1998 universally praised Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard, Ms Desai is the first woman to win the Man Booker since 2000 when Margaret Atwood scooped the prize with The Blind Assassin. The Inheritance of Loss, described by reviewers as ‘the best, sweetest, most delightful novel’, is a radiant, funny and moving family saga.

If you ever doubted the power of a book cover here is confirmation of their importance.

HarperCollins plans to design books for its spring catalogue in shades of 'margarita and sangria,' greens and reds that store owners have told the publisher will dominate that season's colour palette.

The Time Warner Book Group routinely changes the colour or design of book jackets at a store's request so the book will colour coordinate with store merchandise.

This is true of bookstores as well as high end boutiques that promote particular lifestyle and celebrity titles along with their other merchandise.

Home News:

Autumn is a busy season in publishing and we have been been exceptionally busy with our publishing programme. This year we sent Windshift Press, Rooster Fish Press and Absolutely Books titles to the Frankfurt Bookfair. We have had the good fortune to have several enquiries for at least five titles we publish. Over the next few months we will be following up those publishing enquiries.

The holiday seasonis upon us already with bookings for Craft Fairs and other seasonal delights.

Note: While every effort is made to check the markets suggested in this newsletter, writers must use their own judgment when submitting their work.
