Thought for the Month

"What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself." - Abraham Maslow

Hello Writers,

For me June heralds the beginning of the season's fruitfulness. In my own garden strawberries and chives together with other herbs, early salad greens and a wide variety of flowers all vie for attention. It is also true that a new writing project is crowding against my novel and showing its face. There is always a great debate amongst writers as to the merits of concentrating solely on one writing project until it is finished or allowing oneself to work away at several projects at the same time. The answer to that question remains very personal but like any other muscle in the body the writing muscle responds wonderfully to exercise and attention. Happy stretching ... Sandra

PUBLISHING NEWS:

BookExpo Canada, set to run June 9-12 in Toronto, starts off this year with a day-long forum, "Writers to Readers: Linking the Content Creators to the End Users which aims to focus on current publishing struggles.

According to Don Sedgwick of the Transatlantic Literary Agency, who is organizing the event in cooperation with the Book and Periodical Council (BPC), the forum will help publishers learn to cope with a shrinking traditional marketplace, understand new publishing technologies, as well as receive tips on how to utilize the Internet to drive book sales.

For anyone planning to attend, the 2007 Jerusalem International Book Fair has been rescheduled because of conflicting dates with the London Book Fair. Originally slated for mid-April, the Fair is now set to happen February 18 through the 23.

The buzz at the recent BookExpo America was definitely back to fiction, after last year's burst of excitement over memoirs burned out in James Frey's three-week disastrous media exposure. With second novels coming from bestsellers Mitch Albom, Charles Frazier and Mark Haddon, and new works from literary favorites like Alice McDermott, Richard Ford, Cormac McCarthy and Edward P. Jones, many booksellers expressed optimism about the fall.

Note: While every effort is made to check the markets suggested in this newsletter, writers must use their own judgment when submitting their work.
