Thought for the Month

"It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end." - Ursula K. LeGuin

Hello Writers,

Summer is the season where we seem to take more journeys than any other time in the year. We take holidays, we ferry visitors to places of interest and we visit friends and family more regularly. On these journeys we are often challenged with heat, road construction and ferry delays. We spend time in traffic cues and ferry line-ups. Our nerves fray and our normally balanced demeanor changes. When I am faced with such challenges and delays I have learned to take out a piece of paper and furiously write down any and all words that come to mind. By the time I reach the meditative state I am beginning to write some things that I might actually keep in my writing folder.

Happy holidays... Sandra

WRITING TIP:

In life everything is relevant; not so in a novel. You need to shape the story into a whole which may require the elimination of some detail.

PUBLISHING NEWS:

If you've ever wondered what was in the British Queen's handbag or suspected that it contained nothing and was only carried for show all will be revealed this autumn. HarperCollins is to publish a children’s book based on the Queen’s handbag, with all proceeds going to the Children’s Literary Trust.

In case you hadn't heard two characters will die in the final Harry Potter book but author J.K. Rowling isn’t saying who.

“I have to say two die that I didn’t intend to die,” Rowling revealed in a recent interview. “One character got a reprieve.”

She previously revealed that the last chapter of the seventh book was written some time ago. “It’s now changed very slightly,” she said.

On the home front Windshift Press authors have been busy.

Author of Take The Wings of AMorning, Kathy Wilson, has just returned from a successful trip to the UK. I'm not sure if she saw the Queen's handbag or ate trifle, but those of us who stayed here got a great 'trifle treat'.

Hosted by Eliza Hemingway of Arts Angels Publishing we had an evening of readings and great lashings of very English trifle on June 24th at In The Bean Time in Ladysmith.

Then there are the prairie connections. Lenore Hellum, author of Nine Lives, has recently returned from a great tour in Saskatchewan culminating in a special launch evening at McNally Robinson's in Saskatoon. This will be followed in August by Connie Kurtenback, a contributor to the anthology The Oyster Speaks, visiting McNally Robinson in August as well as other parts of Saskatchewan.

We continue to be busy with local community events. This Saturday [July 8th] we will have book table in Chemainus at their street faire. Drop by to chat if you are in town.
