"Redeem
The time. Redeem
The unread vision in the higher dream ..."

-T.S. Eliot

Hello Readers and Writers,

Some days are shaped by simple pleasures, other days are redeemed by them. Today my fingers are dyed red as they type these words. It is the red that remains from the pleasure of harvesting my first strawberry crop of the season. I am tempted to say that there are no words to describe the exquisite pleasure of fresh strawberries but instead I will leave you to be inspired by 'summer' words to include in your next writing project.

Happy gardening,

Sandra

*************

If you ever wondered how some books become best-sellers, here is one possibility. This practice on some level has gone on in the booktrade for some years. I was just surprised to read what the current costs are. Here are some UK examples.

It has been reported that Waterstone's has offered publishers a promotional package costing 45,000 pounds[$90,000] in return for a high-profile spot in the run-up to Christmas. That package, open to just six titles, will buy space in the windows and front-of-store displays at all 300 branches, virtually guaranteeing a place in the bestsellers list. For a payment of 25,000 pounds [$50,000], copies will be placed in special 'gift book' bays around the front of the store, while 17,000 pounds[$34,000] will earn 'offer of the week' status."

The Daily Mail also reported that "W.H. Smith charges as much as 200,000 pounds [$400,000] in the pre-Christmas period--and as a result, large publishing houses pay multi-million pound sums every year just to secure the best positions for their titles."

Home News:

At Windshift Press we are busy finalizing our Autumn/Winter 2007 publishing schedule and preparing to produce our Autumn/Winter 2007 catalogue. We have some great new books on our list. Along with this we are doing a round of summer fetes and fairs. Our next event is July 21 - an afternoon in Milner Gardens, Qualicum Beach with an array of local artists. Several authors have arranged garden parties in August for their books. Selling books amongst the flowers. What a wonderful treat~!
