February 2007

Quote of the Month

"As artists, we are both the horse and the rider of our talent. When we are thrown, we cannot let that throw us. It is part of the territory.

Get back on the horse."

Walking in This World - Julia Cameron

Hello Writers

February is traditionally a month of hearts, flowers and chocolates. Remember to spoil yourself. You are worth it.

Thinking ahead. If you didn't write a piece for Valentine's Day consider doing it this month when you are in the mood. Most magazines and periodicals plan their magazine content at least six months in advance, perhaps longer. Polish your piece next month and get in before others think of it, thus increasing your chances of your writing being chosen.

Happy writing ... Sandra

Publishing News:

The art of the novel has taken a new twist. On book shelves is a new Finnish novel that consists entirely of text messages. The texts are rife with grammatical errors and the abbreviations commonly used in text messaging.

Recently Canadian publishers and booksellers have formed a joint initiative to promote Canadian authored books from Canadian owned publishing houses. It is a great opportunity to celebrate Canadian authors form coast to coast.

The collapse of the major US distributor AMS in the US is having a significant effect on many small and medium sized publishers. Even larger publishing houses are owed billions of dollars. As with all bankruptcy's, unsecured creditors stand to lose most of their investment. This will have long term effect on the profit that publishers and authors can expect in 2007. Let's hope they are able to work this out.

Home News:

It is the season for bookfairs. We are off to the Western Book Reps Association Fair for booksellers and publishers next week and looking forward to several March events.

We have an exciting Spring list of publications to present at these events. Some of our new books include: Terra Infirma by A.J. Mallinson; A Place Where Weeds & Roses Grow by Joan Spencer; Sinclair's Legacy by Mel McIlveen and Circle of Attachment by Elizabeth Gallacher.

Our distribution company Absolutely Books has taken on two new authors this month - Peace Begins With Me by Ted Kuntz and The War at Home by Jack Rasmus.

Note: While every effort is made to check the markets suggested in this newsletter, writers must use their own judgment when submitting their work.
