Thought for the Month
Hello Authors and Readers, Spring is late in arriving here on the coast. Longing to be outdoors we can lose sight of the joys and beauty of our home. The interior of our home reflects who we are just as the depth of our writing does. Take a moment to examine a piece of recent writing, fluff its pillows, straighten its rugs and send it on its way. Happy housekeeping, Sandra Markets: The Spoon River Poetry Review seeks poetry submissions. Manuscript Evaluation -Treat yourself or a writing friend/relative to a manuscript evaluation from a publishing professional. This could include advice on a short story before submitting it to publishers or an evaluation of your novel or non-fiction book. Ask for details by e-mailing Windshift. Please put 'manuscript critique' in the subject line. Publishing News: Still Awards To Be Won Sana Krasikov, author of the short story collection One More Year, has won the $100,000 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature for emerging writers of Jewish literature. Published by Spiegel & Grau, this collection features portraits of Russian and Georgian immigrants to the U.S. in the post-Cold War period. Dalia Sofer, author of The Septembers of Shiraz (Ecco), has won the $25,000 Sami Rohr Prize Choice Award. This debut novel considers a Jewish family in the period after the Islamic Revolution in Iran. The Sami Rohr Prize is the largest monetary prize of its kind in the Jewish literary world, and one of the largest literary prizes worldwide. The Prize considers fiction and nonfiction in alternating years. The presentation of the Sami Rohr Prize and the
Choice Award will be held in May at a gala Awards Ceremony at the Museum
of Jewish Heritage in New York City.
Diversity is the Key Salman Rushdie and The PEN American Center have announced the program for the Fifth Annual World PEN Voices Festival of International Literature, which will take place in New York April 27 through May 3. This years theme is Evolution/Revolution. Panels, discussions, readings and performances are set to consider change in the world. In total, 160 authors from 40 countries will participate in this event. We cannot begin to understand the problems of the world
if we do not read its literature. Home News: Despite the late arrival of Spring and the continuing concern about the economy in North America and beyond we continue to be very busy at Windshift Press. Many of the traditional events and bookfairs we are used to attending have been canceled so more work is being put into alternative book marketing approaches. Note: While every effort is made to check the markets suggested in this newsletter, writers must use their own judgment when submitting their work.
